  1. Read John 8:52-59.  Do you think Jesus didn¡¯t understand the correct use of grammatical tenses?  What does he mean when he says, ¡°I am¡± instead of ¡°I was¡±?

 

  1. Read John 10:27-30 and 14:1-9.  Whose hands are we in, the hands of Jesus or the hands of God?  What is the good news for Thomas and Philip?

  1. Read John 1:1-18 and Colossians 1:15-17.  Why does John use ¡°Word¡±  (µÀ) as a name for Jesus?  How did God create the universe (see Psalm 33:6-9)?

 

  1. Read Proverbs 8:22-31.  In the light of John 1:1-3 and Colossians 1:15-17, how do you understand Proverbs 8:22-31?  How does John 1:1 take you one step further in your understanding of the Proverbs passage?

 

  1. Read Colossians 2:9, l Timothy 3:16, and Hebrews 1:1-3.  Why is ¡°Son of God¡±, referring to Jesus, something like a metaphor, and not the same as saying that you are the son or daughter of your parents?

 

  1. Read John 8:23-30.  Notice the translators¡¯ problem in translating verses 24 and 28.  What is Jesus saying about himself?

  1. Read John 7:1-9, Luke 9:51-53, Mark 10:32-34 and Luke 13:31-35.  How did Jesus¡¯ behavior change toward the end of his ministry?

 

  1. Read John 12:20-27. 

(a)    What do you think the Greeks might have wanted to talk to Jesus about?

(b)   What did Jesus mean when he said the Son of Man will be glorified?

(c)    Was the crucifixion a tragic mistake or part of a divine plan?  Or both?  (Note 1 Corinthians 2:6-8)

 

  1. Read John 13:1-17.  How does Philippians 2:5-11 help you understand the meaning of this incident?

 

  1. Read John 13:18-27 and Matthew 24 and 25.  Did Jesus call Judas to be a disciple so that Judas could betray him?  Do you se any indications that Jesus did not want Judas to betray him and tried to persuade him aginst doing so?

  1. Read 2 Corinthians 5:16-21.

(a)    Luther loved to call the gospel ¡°the wonderful exchange¡±.  What do you think he meant by that?

(b)   Can you see the wonderful exchange in Galatians 3:13, Colossians 2:13-14, and 1 Peter2:22-24 and 3:18?

 

  1. Read Matthew 4:1-11.  In the light of the wonderful exchange, what is the main point of this story?

 

3.  Read mark 3:27 and Hebrews 2:14-15.

(a)    How do these passages explain what happened on the cross?

(b)   Can you see this theology in John 12:27-33, 2 Corinthians 4:4, Colossians 1:13-14, and I John 3:8?

(c)    Is this a better way to explain the cross?  Is it easier for people to accept an explanation in terms of victory over the forces of evil, than to accept the idea that they must confess that they are sinners and need to be forgiven?
